Judgment on San Diego Comic-Con 2015
The Mega City II Hall of Justice dispatched several judges to help keep order at San Diego Comic Con 2015 during the week of July 9 to 12. Judges could be spotted throughout the event with a few on solo patrol with as many as 8 appearing sporadically throughout on Saturday where group assignments in formations as large as 6 could be seen at times. The average squad unit for key events averaged 3 to 4 judges, making sure that special guests (artists and writers at the IDW and 2000AD booths and panels) that made appearances had secured special detail protection. Other high profile items of value such as the original blockade runner miniature from the first Star Wars film at the McCune Masterworks booth or the new 3A Judge Dredd Action figures also were assigned protective judge details. The good turnout of judges made for another successful Comic-Con with dangers and threats kept well under control.
For Judge Dredd fans there were plenty of panels and signings to attend. The highlight of which, 2000AD had co-creator Carlos Ezquerra as a special guest. He was the original artist that worked with writer John Wagner to design and create Judge Dredd. He was available each day of the con for a couple hours to sign and greet fans on the exhibit floor. He spoke about his experience as an artist at the 2000AD panel on Thursday and on Saturday's panel he was presented the distinguished Inkpot Award. Dredd film concept artist Jock also was a guest on Thursday's panel, he was also on hand for signing on Thursday with his special limited edition concept art book of his work on the film Ex-Machina available to purchase at the 2000AD booth.
Friday afternoon, the judges were joined by a mystery judge. The identity was known only by a few members of the Judge Dredd Costume Group, who kept the identity tight. The mystery judge was not revealed until he made his way down to the exhibit hall to become the 6th member of a 5-man patrol: Adam Savage from Mythbusters. Known for his elaborate costumes and going incognitio at SDCC, the judge costume fit him well.
Also on Friday, the American publisher for Judge Dredd comics, IDW had Ulises Farinas join the panel to reveal the New Judge Dredd title: Mega City Zero. Following the success of his artwork with the Mega City II title, Ulises now gets in with his hand at writing all new material for this new area in the world of Judge Dredd.
On Saturday, a squad of 3 judges escorted Carlos Ezquerra from his panel to the exhibit floor for his signing at the 2000AD booth. There at the booth, costumer Max Replica, (who has been Judge Dredd costuming for 5 years) revealed his new Soviet Comic Judge costume. Later that day a squad of 4 judges set a security detail for the IDW Judge Dredd signing. Special guests available to greet fans and sign books included Ulises Farinas (Mega City II artist & the upcoming Mega City Zero writer), Douglas Wolk (Mega City II writer), Dan McRaid (Mega City Zero artist) and Carlos Ezquerra (Judge Dredd co-creator). Nearby at the 3A booth, their new Judge Dredd figure line was unveiled to be available later this year. Some of the lucky few that stopped by the 3A booth got their hands on the all new Comic-Con Exclusive Judge Fish!
